Exclusive interview on journey from Business Administration to Commerce & Technology

Embarking on a career path is like setting sail on a vast ocean of possibilities, where each step taken, shapes and individuals' professional journey. This journey tends to start right after high school for most people. It is an exciting and scary time, where at just a young age, we’re asked to take the first step in our professional journey with limited support systems and resources.

Allan graciously shared his story with us, shedding light into his unique voyage. Despite already establishing a steady career, Allan made the decision to return to school to "refresh his skills." Currently a full-time student at Humber College, he is pursuing a postgraduate certificate in Business Insights and Analytics, seeking to expand his horizons.

Even though it's been a long time since Allen graduated high school, we asked him to think back on how he was feeling during this time. He explained that it was a confusing and exciting time. He initially wanted to study accounting, but realized this wasn't what he wanted to do and he was simply doing it to please his family. “I didn't like it and I felt extremely pressured by my family. That’s when I realized I needed to do what's best for me.” He then went to study business administration and became a claims analyst for Allstate.

Even after establishing a career Allen decided to shift gears and go after something different. The field he worked in was changing and he realized he needed to further develop his skills.

“Learning is continuous, you’re never too old to keep learning.”

Allen has a very powerful perspective. Professional journeys aren't linear. We are asked to make a life changing decision at a very young age and sometimes the journey doesn't align with what we truly want and what we are passionate about and that is completely okay! As our society and technology keeps evolving, it is up to us to keep up.

Allen is currently working towards converting his business administration degree into commerce and technology. He wants to pursue a career in IT solutions. We asked him if he had any advice for young students who are just starting to embark on their career path and he said: “learn who you are as a person. Question the things you hear and be sure to do a lot of research. Explore your options and think of the long term. If you’re not able to think of the long term that is okay too! You will figure it out, step by step. Learning is continuous. Don't ever feel like you're ever going to be too old to learn.”

A Reminder

Allen's story serves as a reminder that our career journeys may take unexpected turns, but with the right mindset and a thirst for knowledge, we can chart a course towards personal and professional fulfillment. It is extremely important to understand your interests and relative options that will help you make informed career decisions.
